About Us

JDRC, Inc. was founded by two young women in 1996, one Deaf and one hearing. They dreamed that the Jewish Deaf can participate in and shape the rich worlds of Jewish liturgy, education, culture, and communal life on an equal basis with hearing Jews.

JDRC was created as a response to painful experiences and troubling observations about the status of the Jewish Deaf and their role in the greater Jewish community. They saw that the leadership of the Jewish Deaf population is aging, and that no new generation was coming forward to hear thier stories or take their lead. They were meeting many Deaf Jews who were unaffiliated, who had nowhere to worship or to give their children a quality Jewish education. Nor could they even conceive of a Jewish life because there was no way for them to gain access to the greater Jewish community. They were dismayed that there was not an advocacy and policy organization to serve as a clearinghouse and support center for the Jewish Deaf, and to be a resource for any individuals or institutions interested in closing the gap between Deaf and hearing Jews.
